This semi-brutalist appearance is softened by the warmth of hardwood timbers and the overall palette is rounded off with feature 4mm powdercoated aluminium screens with a waterjet cut pattern which provides privacy to spaces when viewed from the street yet still allows plenty of light into those bedrooms for the inhabitants. This basic construction principle means that the form of the building imparts a bold effect and highlights the strength and durability of the ICF. The design provides for simplicity of construction - another key criteria – with main loadbearing walls located over one another. Instead of conforming to a stereotypical suburban house, our design solution was to provide a building that is a distinct juxtaposition to the norm. This excellent brief enabled us to explore ways to utilise Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) as the main construction material. In this project, our client wanted to create a strong and durable structure that provided privacy while also allowing for passive, sustainable principles to be implemented.
